    In 1888, Mariana Arnot Ogden founded Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital with the mission to provide care to the people of Elmira and its surrounding communities without regard to age, sex, color, creed or nationality. AOMC tops the list of preferred healthcare facilities in the region. It is a not-for-profit, 256-bed tertiary medical facility with specialty services for cardiovascular care, cancer care, women’s health services and maternity, emergency medicine and surgery.

    CareFirst NY, Inc. is the sole hospice provider for the New York State counties of Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben. With a staff of over 60 – and a volunteer corps of even more – CareFirst served over 700 families through Hospice in 2017. About half of the patients served were coping with cancer, with heart disease, respiratory disease and dementia counting for another approximately 10 to 15% each. The average length of time a patient was on Hospice was 46 days, but over 70% of patients died within 30 days of being admitted, and over 35% died within a week of admission.

    In addition to hospice care, CareFirst also provides palliative care and bereavement services. Education to the community is an important aspect of their work in the southern tier.
